Aldona legislator Dayanand Narvekar today criticised the government for failure to implement the other features of the Sports Policy.
Narvekar, who was the chairman of the committee which drafted the comprehensive Sports Policy for the State in 2007, said that it took two years to draft the policy which is now lying somewhere with the government.
He said that with the implementation of the first part of the policy wherein students are given exemption in attendance and grace marks for participation in sports, has benefited many students.
“Why are the other features of the policy not implemented? he asked adding “implement them as it will benefit many students.”
The legislator also questioned why cricketer Shadab Jakati, who played for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, was not given cash purse of Rs 5 lakh.
“When Swapnil Asnodkar played for Rajasthan Royals, he was given Rs 5 lakh. Why this discrimination with Jakati? Even Jakati should be given the amount,” Narvekar said.
National Games: Narvekar pointed out that the State is making preparations for the National Games in 2011, which is most likely to be held in 2013.
“If we are going to host National Games what are we doing to prepare our teams? Only planning infrastructure will not help,” he said.
Narvekar said Goan teams will be competing with the best athletes in the country.
“The association should be allowed announce teams now for which the players and athletes be given training,” he stated.
