NCP demands relief for kin of fishermen who died in boat capsize

VASCO: Goa NCP President Jose Philip D’Souza on Wednesday demanded that the government stop fooling Goans and give them what was promised, failing which his party would hold an agitation.

He was reacting to Herald’s article about the delay in compensating the family of the two fishermen who died after their trawler ‘Maria Rosa’ capsized near the Naval Coast Battery off Vasco on August 1, 2014.
On Tuesday, the fishing community slammed Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado for the year-long delay. D’Souza, who hails from the Khariwado fishing community, later decided to take up the issue.
“The government’s insensitivity to the pain and suffering of the fishermen’s families stands exposed. Local MLA Carlos Almeida, who accompanied Furtado, has remained a mute spectator. It was Carlos who convinced Furtado to promise the compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each of the family members. NCP empathizes with the family members, who are struggling to make ends meet,” said D’Souza.
“The NCP demands that the government release the compensation within a month, failing which we will hold an agitation,” he warned.
