NCP to contest CCP elections,eyes 15 seats

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today announced that it will contest 15 of 30 wards in the forthcoming polls to the Corporation of the City of Panaji to be held on March 13.
NCP General Secretary Avinash Bhonsle confirmed that the party will contest 15 wards but refused to divulge details.
“We will release the names of candidates only when we file nomination papers on Wednesday”, Bhonsle told Herald.
NCP legislator Francisco Mickky Pacheco had decided to float a panel for CCP elections after Education Minister Atanasio Monserrate participated in a revolt against him. Bharatiya Janata Party and Monserrate had already announced their panels some time back.
While Monserrate announced his 30-member panel with 55 per cent new faces, BJP finalised its list of 25 candidates with the remaining to be decided shortly.
Meanwhile, Goa State Election Commission (GSEC) today announced the detailed schedule of elections to the Corporation of the City of Panjim to be held on March 13.
In the press statement issued on Sunday, GSEC Commissioner Dr M Modassir stated that nomination papers will be accepted by the Returning Officer at its Panjim office from February 14 to February 21. However, nomination papers will not be accepted on Sunday, February 20.
“Each candidate shall deposit a sum of Rs 2000 for general category and Rs 1000 for reserved category in cash with the Returning Officer on or before the date fixed for receiving the nomination papers…” reads the press note.
Scrutiny of nominations will be done of February 22 and 23 while the last date for withdrawing nominations is February 25.
The Commission will release the list of candidates with their respective symbols on February 26.
Candidates have already kick-started their campaigns thereby giving a boost to the abandoned developmental works in their wards.
More than 13,000 voters are expected to exercise their franchise on March 13 from 8 am to 5 pm.
Counting of votes will be held at Government Pharmacy College, Panjim and the results are expected on the same day.
