New bridge on Tar River to be a reality soon

MAPUSA:  Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Monday laid foundation stone for a new bridge on Tar River at Mapusa in the presence of Mapusa MLA Joshua De Souza, Aldona MLA Glenn Ticlo, Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council Shubhangi Vaingankar and Bastora Sarpanch Ranjit Usgaonkar.

Stating that the Water Resources Department (WRD) is working on a plan for beautification of Tar River, the Chief Minister said, “Mapusa was once the economic town of Goa. However, slowly slowly the town started getting congested and now requires expansion. Vertical mobility is the requirement. To beautify Mapusa, desilting of Tar River is required. The river is spread across 10 kms, out of which around two and half kms, is touching the road and the WRD is making a plan to beautify it in the next one and half year. This will be one of the major projects for Bardez Taluka as it will be a spot of attraction for locals as well as tourists,” said the Chief Minister.

“This project will have movement of boats, walking/running track and food court for the people to spend their leisure time and will be taken up jointly by three different departments,” said the Chief Minister.

He also informed that the bridge on Tar River will be completed in next four months which will help in smooth and fast movement of vehicles. The project is estimated at a cost of Rs 10 crore.

Mapusa MLA De Souza said, “This was a long pending project and now since the project is approved, work of the project will start on war footing. This bridge is link between the Mapusa Town and Bastora village and faces traffic congestion during the peak hours. It will be a 40 metres long four-lane bridge with one metre footpath. The project is planned considering the requirement of next 50 years,” said the Mapusa MLA.
