New rules on renewable energy use in Goa

NEW DELHI: The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission has mandated increasing use of the renewable energy for Goa and union territories going up to 9% of total electricity consumed in 2018-19 and 17% by 2021-22.

The 2018-19 quota includes 3.60% solar power that goes up to 8% in 2021-22. The current year target is 4.85% of total electricity consumption, 1.65% of which should be from solar power under the minimum quantum of renewable purchase obligation (RPO) of the renewable energy in kilowatts per hour.
The new regulations come into effect from September 20. Goa had started with use of 1% of total consumption in the renewable energy, quarter of which was solar, in 2010-11 and went up to 3.55%, including 0.85% solar, in 2015-16.
The government had adopted a policy since 2009 for the rapid growth of Renewable Energy deployment in the country to reduce dependence on the coal-based power plants.
