NGO submits suggestions regarding framing of law to annihilate widowhood

PANJIM: NGO WE (Why Exclude) has requested the State government for a participatory approach for framing of the draft bill for eliminating annihilating widowhood practices in the State.
In the suggestions submitted to the Department of Women and Child Department, WE has urged the government to adopt bottom-up participatory process as followed during the drafting of the Goa Children’s Act, 2003, in order to combat the discrimination and oppression faced by widows.
The Goa Children’s Act, widely lauded as one of the best drafted laws in the country, serves as a shining example that other States in the country have emulated. WE has envisioned that the law against annihilating widowhood practices will stand as an equally exemplary piece of legislation, characterised by inclusivity, justice, and a rights-based approach.
A delegation of WE submitted a detailed representation outlining the necessary steps to be taken in this regard to Director of Women and Child Development Deepali Naik. Additionally, it also gave its representation to Poriem MLA Deviya Rane, who assured them her unwavering support for the cause.
WE also assured the government that it will extend its full cooperation within its capacity throughout the drafting process, raising awareness, and facilitating the implementation of the law.
WE stated that the ensuing monsoon session of the legislative Assembly has rekindled their hopes of getting a comprehensive law enacted in the State that upholds the rights of widows and fosters a more equitable society in the State.
During the last Assembly session, Minister for Women and Child Development Vishwajit Rane had assured Members that a bill addressing discriminatory and annihilating widowhood practices will be presented to the legislators in the upcoming monsoon session of Legislative Assembly and the Minister for taking the proactive step.
