MARGAO: A day after the daring burglary sent shockwaves across Benaulim and beyond, police could not collect any clues leading to a breakthrough in the St John the Baptist Church tabernacle theft case.
Sub-divisional Police Officer, Margao DySP Mohan Naik, told Herald that he has directed the Colva police to carry out a search for the tabernacle, which might be abandoned by the miscreants after breaking it open. “The thieves might have probably lifted the tabernacle presuming some valuable inside since it could not be opened. I have told the police to find out whether the tabernacle has been abandoned at an isolated place after breaking it open,” he said.
Replying to a question, he said the police are baffled over the mystery surrounding the theft when the doors and windows of the Church were all locked and closed.
Meanwhile, St John the Baptist Parish Priest Fr Nelson Colaco said that a police team visited the Church on Wednesday evening as part of the investigation.
Colva police station in-charge, PI Uttam Raut Desai, who resumed duties on Wednesday, said he has asked the investigating officer to round up the suspects for interrogation in the case.
