One panch backtracks, five remain adamant to press for his ouster

MARGAO: Guirdolim village witnessed an uproar on Wednesday over the no-confidence motion tabled against Sarpanch Milagres de Chandor, as a large number of his supporters descended on the Panchayat ghar and later took out a rally in his support.
Following the development, one of the signatories to the motion and deputy Sarpanch Flavia D’Costa later publicly declared her decision to withdraw her signature from the no-trust motion. Flavia said she has taken the decision as per the wishes of the people from her ward.
Carrying banners, supporters of the Sarpanch descended on the Panchayat ghar this morning where a panchayat meeting was scheduled today. They sought to know the reasons behind tabling the motion against the Sarpanch and demanded resignation of those who has signed on it.
Maina-Curtorim police also made their presence felt at the Panchayat ghar as a precautionary measure to avert any law and order situation.
Addressing his supporters, Milagres said he has done nothing wrong for the village, but was instrumental in bringing schemes and projects during his short tenure. He rubbished the allegations that he did not take the members into confidence on development matters, saying that all the members were treated equally. One of his supporters Xavier Costa said that Milagres has implemented many projects during his six-month tenure and demanded his continuance in office.
The opposition, however, appears determined to dislodge the Sarpanch, reiterating that he did not take members into confidence. Panch member Sonia Dias also condemned the assembly of the supporters of the Sarpanch at the Panchayat ghar, claiming that some of the people had even come from neighbouring villages.
“Though deputy Sarpanch Flavia D’Costa has announced her decision to withdraw her resignation, we the remaining five signatories will express our lack of confidence in the sarpanch as and when the BDO calls a meeting. The sarpanch should have discussed with us the no-trust motion instead of using pressure tactics by bringing people at the panchayat ghar,” she said.
Milagres, however, denied his hand in mobilising the people, saying the people have come on their own, after coming to know of the no-trust motion tabled against him.
