SMCAC senior lecturer Dr Jagmohan Singh took over the post later, but he was not made a full-time principal despite being qualified. He returned to lecturing after officiating for two years. Senior lecturer Dr Nadaf has been occupying the post for the last three years, but the college management has not regularized him either.
Advertisements for a full-time principal are regularly placed in newspapers, but only one or two candidates attend the interview. As per the rules, at least three candidates should apply for the post. The management was unable to get dummy candidates to fulfill the conditions.
Dr Nadaf stated that, as per the sixth pay commission, the principal’s tenure is five years. After that, the principal has to return to his original position, which was considered to be a demotion. Hence, no qualified person was interested to be the principal. The management can extend the term for another five years, but only on an ad hoc basis.
The college, from where over 1,300 students have graduated in the last two decades, was recently given a ‘B’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. However, the college still has many issues. Students and parents have demanded that the management immediately fill up the post to improve the standard of the college.
Government High School, Shristal-Canacona is in the same situation. The post of headmaster has been vacant for three years. The students and parents have to face many difficulties as there is no competent person to address to their grievances. The PTA has threatened to start an agitation from August 1, if the post is not filled by then.
PTA President Dashrat Gaonkar has tried hard for many years to get a full-time headmaster. He made a representation to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, but in vain.
