PONDA: The State-level annual Shigmo parades stand cancelled in view of the rising COVID cases in Goa, but the government has created a “festive” atmosphere at Dada Vaidya Chowk, Ponda with décor, which has surprised several residents.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Friday announced that the State-level annual Shigmo parades, scheduled to be held in Ponda, Panjim and Mapusa from March 30, stand cancelled.
The government’s decision to cancel Shigmo parade has upset most residents, who have questioned the need of setting up the décor, when the festivities stand cancelled. But, a few say they are happy that at least the government has created a “festive” atmosphere.
Sanket Narvekar, an artist said the décor at Dada Vaidya Chowk gives a feeling that the government is going to organise the Shigmo parade.
Ulhas Naik from Ponda said, “What is the need of the décor when people are upset with the fact that Shigmo has been cancelled.”
Some artists claimed that the government’s move to put up the Shigmo décor is like rubbing salt into their wounds as they are not able to showcase their art.
With the government displaying Shigmo décor in the heart of the town, the artists, who have completed their floats, want the government officials to at least inspect their floats and pay compensation at the earliest.
A float artist from Kavlem complained that no government official has come to inspect their float.
