PANJIM: Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL) on Monday ruled out any crisis in the supply of beef claiming that routine operations are being carried out at the complex and about 25 to 30 bulls are being slaughtered daily.
Speaking to Herald, GMCL, Managing Director, Uday Pednekar said, “GMCL is regularly getting animals for slaughter. We have about 30-35 bulls still at the abattoir and till today morning we have received another 30 male bulls from traders for slaughter. There is no shortage at present.”
GMCL officials clarified that the complex is a service provider to the traders who bring the animals for slaughter and is not the authority to decide whether there is a shortage or excess.
“Routine operations are going on and the corporation is not the authority to decide whether there is a shortage or excess. This complex is a service provider to traders who bring animals for
slaughter. We supply meat to four municipal areas – Panjim, Mapusa, Vasco and Margao,” Pednekar said.
He added that on an average the meat complex slaughters 25 to 30 bulls daily and gets about 2.5 to 3 tonnes of meat which works out to 100 kg of meat per cattle head.
Asked about possible beef shortage in the future, Pednekar said, “I cannot comment on beef shortage in the future. When we get animals from traders for slaughter, we shall provide our abattoir for slaughter.”
He also said that as per the request of traders and as per the Supreme Court directives after the slaughter, the meat is kept in chillers.
Meat traders had feared that Goa might face a shortage of beef as supply of cattle from neighbouring Karnataka is affected.
“There is no shortage from Goa Meat Complex but transporting bulls from neighbouring Karnataka is the problem. In the last eight days we have faced this problem,” Hussain Khatib, a meat trader from Panjim said.
