VASCO: Hit by a no-confidence motion within seven days of her being elected as chairperson of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), Chairperson Tara Kerkar on Wednesday refuted allegations that she is involved in any illegal activities.
Speaking to Herald, Kerkar said the allegations levelled by the 11 councillors, who have moved a no-confidence motion against her, are “baseless.”
“Let them prove that I am involved in illegal activities. Let them show one file that I have signed supporting illegalities ever since I was elected as chairperson. It was I who  always raised my voice against any illegal activities during the council meetings,” stated Kerkar.
“The council has failed to recover the outstanding dues and since the process of recovery has been started, the other councillors are jealous,” she said. Kerkar said every year just before the monsoon, the MMC sends notices to about 300 houses at Jetty Sada and at Rumda Chawl in Mormugao to vacate the houses as the area is prone to landslides. “Despite sending such notices this year, an illegal construction is on going on a hillock,” she added.
“The 11 councillors are openly supporting such illegal constructions and to cover their illegalities, they have accused me of abetting illegal activities. As long as I am in the chair, I will go all out against all illegal activities going on in the port town,” said Kerkar.
Kerkar further said ever since she was elected as MMC chairperson, she has been denied the chairperson’s car and she has to travel to any site on her two-wheeler.
