PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has issued a notice to the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) for failing to tackle and maintain the garbage dumping site at Assagao plateau, leading to environmental pollution in the area.
The notice has been issued for non-compliance of the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2008 with respect to the proper collection, segregation, storage, transportation, scientific processing and disposal of solid waste thus attributing to the environment pollution in the area.
GSPCB Chairman Jose Manual Noronha said that during the site inspection conducted of garbage dumping site at Assagao, it was observed that the mixed solid waste was burnt leading to pollution and environmental hazards.
The Board has directed the council to stop burning waste and to set up a baling machine. MMC has been given a final opportunity to comply with the directions within 15 days, failing which the High COurt will be informed.
