Not just ZPs, Shigmo too on party lines

MARGAO: Politics in Goa’s commercial capital will spill onto the Shigmo festival with the town appearing all set to host two Shigmo parades – one led by the Damu Naik panel and other by the Vijai-Digambar group.

This became apparent at the 28th annual general body meeting of the Madgao Shitmotsav Samiti held on Sunday under the chairmanship of Vasant Shirodkar and which was attended by Fatorda legislator Vijai Sardesai, Convenor Girish Chodankar, Co-Chairman Damodar Adpaikar and Margao Municipal Council councillors Doris Texeira, Rosy Pereirea, Tito Cardozo and Avinash Shirodkar.
Patron and advisor of the Samiti, Sardesai said that the Madgao Shigmostav Samiti  is the only Shigmo Samiti registered under the Societies Act and accused the government of meting out injustice to the panel.
He recalled that the then government headed by Ravi Naik had promoted Shigmostav Samitis all over Goa by way of official grants to preserve the rich heritage and culture.
He announced that Madgao Shigmostav Samiti will celebrate the Shigmo 2015 by raising its own funds and without any government grants since the government is passing through a financial crisis. He appealed to the local authorities to grant permission and extend all support to the Madgao Shigmostav Samiti to conduct the celebrations as they are saving public funds.
Convenor of the Samiti Girish Chondankar said the Samiti was registered under the Society’s Act in 2008 under registration number 24/GOA/2008, adding that the Samiti is the legal entity existing in Margao.
