Nothing to cheer: A waterless Gudi Pawda for St Inez locals

Already inconvenienced due to dust pollution & closure of roads, a major breakdown caused on account of Smart City works forced the residents to go without water as taps ran dry

PANJIM: There was nothing to cheer for the residents of St Inez, Panjim as taps ran dry on the eve of Gudi Padwa due to major breakdown caused on account of the ongoing Smart City works.

The St Inez residents are already facing hardships and inconvenience due to dust pollution and closure of roads.

On Monday night, while the water was released suddenly a major breakdown was reported at St Inez. On Gudi Padwa day the residents were compelled to go without water with the taps running dry in the morning and also in the evening.

Those residing in the Government Quarters at St Inez were hard hit in the absence of sumps and they were forced to carry water in buckets from ground floor to the top floors. The PWD also could not provide water tankers as roads have been dug in the area.

When contacted, PWD works division III, sub-division-I, Assistant Engineer Sarita Shirodkar said that water shortage occurred due to a major breakdown of the pipeline at St Inez caused due to ongoing Smart City works. “We are at the spot trying to repair the pipeline and water would be released thereafter. If we repair the pipeline by Tuesday night water supply will be released even at midnight because we have filled the water reservoirs,” she said, admitting that restive consumers have been frantically calling the PWD office.
