MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council has issued a show-cause notice to the Ponda based M/s Mass Construction who had bagged the contract to cap the Sonsodo dump yard and the notice was received by the company on July 11.
It may be recalled that Mass Constructions had bagged the tender to cap the Sonsodo dump yard for Rs 11,89,916 and the tender was awarded to it on May 18, 2018 and the company was supposed to complete the work within 60 days of the contract being awarded.
The contract was to cover a total of 24,284 sq mts of area with tarpaulin so that the monsoon water would not seep into the accumulated dump yard and result in leachate flowing out.
Even as the 60 days period given to complete the work is about to end, the work is nowhere close to completion, as such the MMC has issued a show-cause notice to the contractor and his reply is awaited.
The contractor apparently initially covered the dump yard which was however rendered useless by the stray dogs tearing the tarpaulin and the patch work undertaken to cover the exposed portion was a dismal failure as the dump yard is now exposed to the rains at various places.
Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes admitted that the capping was not done properly and leachate has started flowing from the dump yard due to the monsoon waters percolating through the accumulated garbage.
