vasco: Chicalim Parish Priest, Scientist Dr. Fr Bolmax Pereira has made a heartfelt request to the people from local communities and villages not to venture into Zuari river bed to extract clams (‘Tisreos’) and oyster shells (Calvam Haddes’) and warned that rampant removal of the same could lead to irreparable damage to marine life in the Sancoale- Chicalim Bay.

He also urged locals to keep in their mind that the natural resources should be preserved for the future.

It may be recalled that Herald in its Wednesday edition and previous edition has highlighted the efforts made by environmentalists to deter locals from carrying out such activities.

Environmentalists have expressed concern over the activities of the last several days and previous weeks, where in locals in large numbers have been gathering at the Chicalim-Sancoale bay to extract Tisreos and Calvam Hadde in excessive amounts during the low tide.

Fr Pereira, made his plea in a video message that has been circulating amongst the public, where he added that if people keep way, it will help in breeding more clams/ tisroes, which are currently being removed from their natural eco-systems.

Fr. Pereira further pointed out that for the last four years; there was no breeding of tisreos in the Zuari river bed, especially the Chicalim-Sancoale Bay.

“This year, we are lucky to get tisroes and oysters. Therefore we should behave responsibly and preserve and protect these marine resources for future posterity and not exhaust it completely. Over exploitation of marine resources could cause severe environmental damage to the eco-sensitive habitat of the Zuari bay,” he added.
