MARGAO, AUG 14
With the Margao Municipal Council suddenly losing total interest in the composting units, many such units erected in the city have now come in handy for migrants as their place of residence.
One such compositing unit near the Margao Fire station has been coolly converted a makeshift accommodation by the migrants. Inquiries have only revealed that the migrants have been using the composting unit for the purpose of accommodation since the Margao Municipal Council has lost interest in the composting project.
A local resident told Herald that the composting unit near the Fire station was being used as accommodation by the migrants for quite some time with the civic body showing least interest to compost the daily waste.
The Margao Municipal Council has set up as many as 11 composting units in the city as part of the ambitious plan to erect 60 such units across the city. As the units evoked opposition from the citizens, the Civic body restricted the number to 11. Three such units were inaugurated at the hands of Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat, but the units faced closure for want of manpower to man them.
The compositing unit at the electricity quarters, Aquem was being used to store implements by labourers since it was lying unused for quite some time.
