PANJIM, OCT 6
The National Students Union of India (Goa Unit) on Wednesday claimed five out of the nine posts to the Students’ Council of Goa University were won by its candidates.
President Sunil Kawthankar said the top posts of Chairman, Secretary, Lady Representative and two Executive Members were bagged by them. Elections to the remaining posts could not be conducted as the candidates were disqualified after mistakes were found in their nomination forms, he stated.
Pratik Prabhudessai was elected as Chairman of the council. The other members are Bhagyashree Satardekar (Secretary), Komal Naik (Lady Representative) and Nitesh Khavtankar and Wilfred Pereira (both Executive Members).
The election was held today in the Administrative Building of the varsity, six days after the NSUI members ‘gheraoed’ the Vice Chancellor Dileep Deobagkar for holding the same in abeyance and accusing him for acting as per the dictates of BJP’s youth wing.
In a press statement issued here, the Goa Pradesh Youth Congress President Sankalp Amonkar criticised BJP Yuva Morcha for boycotting the election. He said the student community had rejected the BJP and reposed faith in the Congress.
During the day the Students’ Council members, accompanied by other youth leaders, called upon GPCC chief Subhash Shirodkar, who urged them to take up issues dear to student community.
