PANJIM: Panjim Police on Saturday detained the members of the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on an indefinite hunger strike in the City demanding the postponement of the upcoming NEET-JEE and fee waiver for six months by 60 per cent for students during the current COVID pandemic.

The president of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Goa president Ahraz Mulla along with members Naushad Chawdhari and Prasanjeet Dhage had commenced the indefinite hunger strike at Azad Maidan at Panjim.
Earlier this week, NSUI had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding the postponement of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and promoting final year students on the basis of past performance.
Also, as part of nationwide protest, NSUI and Goa Pradesh Congress Committee held protest in Margao against the conduct of NEET and JEE, which are scheduled next month.
“NSUI members are on hunger strike across country. Our demand is clear to postpone the NEET-JEE examinations until the COVID situation in the country is under control. The cases are increasing day by day including in Goa. We are risking lives of students,” Mulla said during the strike.
He said NSUI is demanding to waive off college and school fees by 60 per cent for six months. Mulla alleged that some colleges are charging 60-70 thousand rupees for the semester, which is just not possible during the current pandemic. “Also, when the classes are held online, where is the question of seeking fees? You cannot charge students for online classes,” he said.
The NSUI leader said, “We have put across our demands to Prime Minister, Union Minister for HRD, Governor of Goa, and Chief Minister of Goa but no response.”
