HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, MAY 11
Thousands of people bid a tearful adieu to the Assistant Parish Priest of Nuvem Church, Fr Thomas Fernandes as his mortal remains were laid to rest in his home village Colva on Tuesday evening.
In the morning, hundreds of Nuvem Parishioners gathered at the Church to pay their last respect to the priest, who died while rescuing three youth members of the parish at Galgibag beach on Sunday.
Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao concelebrated a Mass at the church this morning, which was attended by a large number of priests and the parishioners.
The Archbishop remarked that the Archdiocese of Goa has lost a very good priest. He said that till the very end, Fr Thomas showed that he was a true disciple of Christ and followed his teachings. “Jesus had said that there is no greater love than one who lays down his life for others and Fr Thomas has fulfilled the words of Jesus to perfection in his true life”, the Archbishop said.
He further said that Fr Thomas had lived for 38 years and had served the people of God with concern and love during his eight years of priesthood.
The mortal remains were kept open for public to pay their last respect and later carried to his residence at Colva. His remains were laid to rest this evening after an Eucharistic celebration.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat visited the residence of the late priest at Colva and offered his condolences to members of the bereaved family.
