MAPUSA: Newly-elected councillor Sashank Narvekar on Monday informed that he had made an application to the Deputy Collector/SDM, Bardez for cutting and trimming of trees under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 earlier this month but the action wasn’t taken.
“Deputy Collector and SDM Bardez are responsible for after effects of Cyclone Tauktae in Mapusa including power failure,” alleged Sashank. There are trees which pose danger to HT/LT electrical lines and houses at various locations in Duler within Ward No 5, Mapusa Municipal Council.

However, in spite of several reminders, especially after the cyclone warning was issued the concerned authorities turned a deaf ear to the issue.
Narvekar said that on May 16 when the Cyclone Tauktae hit Goa, eight trees at the various locations, including those mentioned in his application crashed within Duler causing damage and loss as was feared.
Narvekar claimed that if appropriate orders or action had taken on time then the damage caused could have been averted. During the aftermath, no personnel was appointed under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and seen at the site.
“This Authority was appointed under Disaster Management Act, 2005 with the Government of Goa and the Chief Minister’s Office so that proper management of services during disasters can be done,” he added.
