PONDA: Even as the State government is making efforts to attract more industrial units to Goa, an oil refinery located in Ponda taluka has reportedly decided to shift its production unit to some other state.
Though the reason to shift the oil refinery from the State is not yet clear, but the 30 permanent employees have been issued transfer orders. Employees are averse to the idea of migrating to other state and in turn requested the company for settlement.
Workers union leader and convenor of Goa Trade Union Confederation Adv Ajitsingh Rane said not only in Ponda taluka but even in Bardez taluka, several industrial units are shifting its production units to other States.
“The case pertaining to the oil refinery unit in Ponda is being worked out between the management and the employees. The workers do want transfer. The company is very cooperative and is ready for discussion to settle the demand through mutual understanding,” said Rane.
Rane alleged that the State government is not serious to safeguard local population employed in the industrial sector.
“Government must formulate Trade Union Act aimed to give justice to people employed in the industrial sector who are often exploited by the industrialists. There are human right violations and various other issues concerning the industrial workers,” he said.
Rane claimed that the new industrial policy 2013 will allow back door entry to SEZ projects.
“It has been said the State’s new industrial policy will generated about 50,000 jobs, but looking at the target investment in crores of rupees, jobs generated will be over two lakh. The new industrial policy is nothing but an effort to provide back door entry to SEZs. There is no guarantee that the industries will mandatorily provide employment to locals,” claimed Adv Rane.
