CANACONA: JMFC Canacona has sentenced a driver to six months simple imprisonment for injuring two youth in a road accident at Vodamoll-Shristhal, Canacona.
Sidharth Naik of Khola was sentenced under Sections 279 (two months simple imprisonment), 337 (one month SI) and 338 (three months SI) and was fined Rs 100 under MV Act 134 (a) (b) and Rs 1,000 under MV Act, or in default of these payments to undergo additional simple imprisonment of one month and two months respectively.
JMFC Vijaylaximi Shivolkar in a judgement pronounced recently also ordered the accused to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to the injured persons or in default to undergo further simple imprisonment of two months.
The convicted driver, Naik, was accused of driving a car (GA-08-E-0656) in a rash and negligent manner on August 30, 2012. Naik was proceeding in the car from Chaudi to Poinguinim when he knocked down a two-wheeler (GA-09-C-6335), which was also proceeding in the same direction, at Vodamoll-Shristhal. Naik fled from the site. Motorcycle rider Vallister Fernandes (21) and pillion rider Vinay Pagi (20) had suffered serious injuries in the accident.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Colman Rodgriguez argued for the State, while Adv V Dessai represented the accused driver.
