VASCO: A cow was injured after it was hit by a vehicle at Varunapuri-Shantinagar, on Sunday.
While locals had pity for the animal, they were agitated over Mormugao Municipal Council’s inaction against the cattle owners who disown their cattle after calving.

It can be recalled that Mormugao Municipal Council had detained some of the stray cattle and had sent them to a Gaushala. However, the stray cattle are still seen wandering on Varunapuri-Shantinagar highway and pose grave threat to the vehicles which cruise at high speeds. After locals raised their voices regarding the issue, Vasco MLA Krishna Daji Salkar asked MMC to sign a memorandum of understanding between the municipal body and a gaushala. The respective cow shelter took in around 250 stray bovines reducing tremendous stress on the traffic.
There are a few cow sheds along the Shantinagar-Varunapuri road and the cattle owners leave their animals to graze. These cattle graze on the grass grown in between the road dividers. Sometimes they are hit by vehicles, while crossing the road but no action is taken against their owners for leaving them unattended. It has to be noted that most of the cattle are let loose after calving or milking.
