PONDA: The rising costs of onions have brought tears to the eyes of Ponda locals. Customers at the main market were shocked to find out that the prices had cross Rs 100 per kg and they received little respite at the Horticulture carts, which were selling onions at Rs 94 per kg.
“It’s now more than one month that the cost of onions has been on the higher side, “said a local. Vendors stated that a month and a half ago, it was sold at Rs 30 per kg, and slowly it had increased to Rs 50, then Rs 60 and now has crossed Rs 100. Locals complained that it was selling as high as Rs 150 per kg due to the huge demand for the same. “The government has to take immediate steps to control the prices and provide onions at a cheaper rate,” said locals, while adding that only a small quantity is available at the horticulture outlets.
