PONDA: Onion prices in the Ponda market jumped from Rs 35 to Rs 80 per kg with the vendors attributing the inflated rates to crop damage in North Karnataka and Maharashtra.
The vendors expressed fear that the prices could further inflate if there is a shortage in supply. However, horticulture outlets sold onions at Rs 64 per kg.
According to vendors, a major part of the produce has been damaged due to heavy rains and very few trucks are arriving in Goa.
The vendors fear that till next stock arrives, the prices are likely to witness a steep rise in the next couple of months.
It may be recalled that in May last year, the prices skyrocketed from Rs 35 to Rs 200 following crop damage.
