Online travel company ordered to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation

PANJIM: The North Goa Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Make My Trip India Pvt Ltd to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to Pradip Kakodkar and three others who had filed a complaint of cheating before the forum in 2012.

PANJIM: The North Goa Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Make My Trip India Pvt Ltd to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to Pradip Kakodkar and three others who had filed a complaint of cheating before the forum in 2012. 
Besides the Rs 1 lakh compensation, the forum has also directed the firm to refund an amount of Rs 40,326 with the interest of 12 percent per annum with effect from May 12, 2015. 
The forum received a complaint on August 22, 2012 from Kakodkar and three others that they had booked six air conditioned rooms online through Make My Trip at the cost of Rs 40,325 in May 2012 as they has planned a family tour to Coorg-Karnataka. 
On reaching the hotel, the hotelier was unable to provide the air conditioned rooms. This was brought to the notice of the booking company as well as the hotel management, but, the booking company did not settle with the clients and the four families were accommodated in non ac rooms. 
The complainant contended before the forum that the rooms were booked on condition of provdiing AC rooms and hence all the families faced inconvenience. 
Social activist Kashinath Shetye was one of the complaints and the case went on for five years and judgement was delivered recently.    
The forum has held Make My Trip India Pvt Ltd responsible for cheating and causing difficulties to all the complainants. In its order, the forum said that the failure to pay the compensation within 30 days will lead to an additional interest of nine percent per annum from the date of order. 
It also directed the booking company and a hotel owner to jointly pay an amount of Rs 50,000 as cost of the litigation.
