VASCO: The State administration demolished 157 out of 205 structures that had been illegally built on sand dunes at Baina beach on Saturday.
Around 300 policemen from South Goa police stations had been deployed to the site to prevent law and order situations during the demolition drive, which began at 7 am and ended by 9.30 am. They included eight PIs, 22 PSIs, a Dy SP, a woman police constable and an IRB constable.
Six teams, each headed by a mamlatdar, were formed to facilitate the demolition. All 157 structures were razed with eight JCB machines and over 100 labourers. Additional District Magistrate – 1, LSR Pereira, was in charge of the demolition.
“I am happy to announce that the demolition drive was peaceful,” said Mormugao Deputy Collector and Sub Divisional Magistrate Sabaji Shetye, adding, “The demolition was in compliance with the National Green Tribunal’s order, which directed the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) to file a compliance report on the demolition order passed by GCZMA against 159 structures. Two of those structures had already been demolished. The demolition squad completed the task well on time.”
