VASCO: Denying claims by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida that a generator had caught fire at the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Dabolim Airport, Airport Director M Suresh on Friday claimed that the power failure was due to operations by technicians to change the electricity feeder.
Almeida had claimed on Thursday that a generator at the NITB had caught fire, forcing airport operations to be shifted to the old airport terminal.
To prove his point that there was no fire at the generator; Suresh took Herald along with the technical experts to the basement of the NITB.
The technical experts informed that the four generator sets of 1500 KV each, procured by the airport authority, are the latest in the market and are fully controlled by a computer.
“The slightest fault in any of the four generator sets can be detected by computers, which sets off an alarm system. Even if one of the four generators trips, the other three generators can function normally without affecting power transmission,” informed the technician. “All the four generator sets are synchronised and if any generator trips, it will be highlighted immediately on the computer which controls the entire system,” added the technician.
Commenting on the alleged power failure on Thursday, the technician explained that other technicians were changing the electricity feeder, due to which the power supply was cut off.
Responding to the collapse of the retaining wall at NITB, Suresh clarified that the contractor is yet to complete the work and hand it over to the airport authority. “The contractor will bear the cost of constructing a new retaining wall,” informed Suresh.
Asked to comment on objections from the four-lane highway authority, Suresh said the airport authority had not encroached on the property of the four-lane highway. “We have constructed the wall at the existing place of the fence, which was separated by the construction of a roadside drain,” informed Suresh. “The wall is constructed so that sludge and other mud during monsoon should not get washed on the road,” added Suresh.
