VASCO: The Collector, South Goa, Swapnil Naik, has recently issued orders notifying the connector between NH17-B and NH17-A via Vales Junction in Alto Dabolim as a ‘No Entry’ zone for transport vehicles, including taxis. In its order, the collector has also directed the authorities to install cautionary signages demarcating the location to facilitate road users.
This will serve as a major relief to road users (pedestrians and cyclists). Due to excessive movement of taxis to and from Dabolim airport and other transport vehicles, this zig zag road had literary become a death trap with reports of accidents taking place at regular intervals. Also this road is narrow at some points and taxis plied on this stretch on top gear posing high risk to pedestrians. Therefore, locals had requested the state administration to take steps and curb the menace.
“This will serve as a huge relief to people and as an achievements for us (Panchayat body) during my tenure as Sarpanch of Chicalim VP. This issue was highlighted by Herald on two occasions after locals complained about speeding taxis on this connector. In fact, after Herald highlighted the issue, I dispatched letters to the Assistant Director of Transport, Vasco as well as PWD officials requesting them to take action immediately in the form of putting up rumblers and speed breakers to curb the increasing number of accidents. Similarly, we had also requested the other concerned department to put up a ban notice on transport vehicles on this road and finally the Collector South Goa took action,” said acting Administrator of Chicalim Village Panchayat Neelima Naik.
It may be recalled that on November 30 and on December 3 2016, Herald highlighted how this connector had become a death trap for the road users.
