Environmentalists have reacted with shock and anger after the Goa Coastal Zone Manage ment Authority (GCZMA) granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to Mi chael Fernandes for the construction of a bar and restaurant at Betalbatim — even though the res toration of sand dunes ordered by the GCZMA in 2019, and reinforced by both the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Supreme Court, has not been carried out.
The controversy dates back to July 3, 2019, when the GCZMA ordered the demolition of all illegal structures belonging to M/s Mickey’s Bar and Restaurant on survey no 96/1 and directed that the dunes be restored to their original condition. Fernandes challenged the order before the NGT and later the Supreme Court, which granted him four months to carry out the demolition.
