Over 200 school children to interact with Navelim farmers on rice cultivation

MARGAO: In a bid to get children inspired and conscious about the importance of the environment, around 200 children have been called to interact with the farmers of Navelim who will begin the cultivation work of 1 lakh square meters of land on Wednesday along with the Don Bosco Agricultural unit.

“Transplanting of fields around Saipem lake will take place on 21st June at 10.30 am,” said Fr George Quadros

It may be recalled that the fields around Saipem lake were lying barren for over three decades but recently the Navelim Panchayat’s Village Development Committee (VDC) and the farmer’s group decided to revive farming in these fields via a community farming initiative.

The Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) is also assisting with this initiative.

A member of the Navelim VDC stated that their team along with the Navelim BMC have invited the 200-odd students from various schools in Navelim to witness this day-long event and will also be the chance to speak directly to the farmers as well officials from the Goa State Biodiversity Board and Agriculture Department.

It is to be noted that the farmers have been facing a lot of issues such as the discharge of untreated sewage in a drain adjacent to the fields but have decided to not let it stop their efforts.

Fr Quadros who has helped revive agriculture in various parts of Goa and the neighbouring village of Chinchinim recently also urged the farmers not to give up hope if they face any more obstacles and that they would have to be patient before they see positive results.
