PANJIM: As the CCP struggles to sort out its issues of lease rent, the Panjim market touted to be a state of the art complex is in a miserable condition.
Though it has been through periodic cleanups and more recently the Swachh Bharat campaign with the Chief Minister and corporators seeking a photo of the miserable conditions persists even today with paan stains adorn the walls, and defacing the wall murals. Vegetables and fruit traders throw leaves and spoilt fruit by the roads. The fish market is a stinking hellhole while the drain opposite is an open invitation to a plague.
Adjoining the market the remnants of the old market where the coconut and flower vendors used to sit the structure which houses the beef vending stall and the gut wrenching toilet smell make the market in the capital city a standing example of how much importance we give to sanitation, health and hygiene.
Since the market was constructed around 2003 not much repair and replacement work has been done, people complain.
Water from the toilets, drains down in the basement parking area, during the rains reaches ankle level.
The Panjim market was constructed by the State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) in two different phases in 2003 and 2007, after demolition of the Portuguese-era structure which existed there.
