MERCES: The Curca Gram Sabha nearly turned into a free-for-all after angry fruits and vegetable vendors of Curca, doing business outside the GMC complex, almost came to blows with a villager, whom they accused of having complained to the Collector of doing illegal business.
Stating that they have received notices from the Collector due to the villager’s complaint which has threatened their livelihood, the vendors sought to take the villager to task over the issue. But the panchayat’s refusal to have any discussion on the issue averted a possibly explosive situation, which was brought under control after a prolonged pandemonium.
The issue of the construction of an illegal toilet near the Shri Naguesh Prassann Temple was also discussed at length with villagers demanding that it should be demolished.
The villagers said a well is located nearby and its water is used for religious purposes.
“The construction of the toilet will contaminate the well water and hurt the religious sentiments of the people,” said a villager and demanded for strict action in the matter.
Replying on the issue, Sarpanch Ghansham Vernekar informed that the panchayat has already issued stop work notice to the offender and has written to the health authorities to conduct an inspection and act accordingly.
A garbage site was also identified at Gauli-Moula in Talaulim. Secretary Jonu Naik informed that the panchayat will now forward the proposal to the BDO and the Goa State Pollution Control Board for their approvals.
The issue of overflowing sewage from the GMC complex was also debated hotly with villager, Marvin Gonsalves, demanding that the panchayat should inspect the site and initiate action against the GMC authorities.
Gonsalves claimed that the GMC has released its sewage into an open pit dug outside its premises, which sometimes overflows and causes health nuisance to the villagers residing nearby.
Villager, Chandu Dantye, also moved a resolution demanding that a playground be constructed near the Curca bridge for the benefits of the villagers.
