MARGAO: Labourers employed to collect the segregated waste from households in seven wards of Fatorda assembly constituency had a harrowing time on Wednesday as most people did not segregate the waste and they had to actually explain how to segregate the waste.
Altogether only 45 bags of segregated dry waste were collected on the first day of segregated waste collection at Fatorda on Wednesday. However, nearly 10 tons of mixed waste was collected from the households.
“We had no option but to collect the mixed waste and explain to the people how to segregate waste and cautioned them that mixed waste would not be collected in future,” said a sanitary worker supervising the work.
It may be recalled that sanitary inspectors were supposed to have explained to the people in the seven wards about segregating their waste and pictorial pamphlets explaining how to segregate the waste were distributed to every household.
However, going by Wednesday’s experience, it all seemed to have fallen on deaf ears, as most people did not segregate the waste.
