PERNEM: Pernem reported its first COVID-19 death on Sunday evening after a 96-year-old woman from Tamboxem succumbed to the infection.
The woman was bought to Tuem Community Health Centre in breathless condition and succumbed later. The health team collected swab samples and late Sunday evening the reports came positive.
Family sources informed that the woman was initially taken to Tuem Health Centre on Saturday after she complained of breathlessness. However, she was discharged later following her stable condition. On Sunday afternoon, when her condition turned unstable she was taken to Tuem Health Centre. However, before she could be shifted to North District Hospital, she died.
Family sources informed that the doctors immediately collected swab samples and directed them to perform the final rites in presence of only close family members.
Meanwhile, the team of doctors have traced 17 people who came in contact with the infected person and the immediate family members.
When the test reports came positive, the authorities informed the family and directed them to undergo home quarantine till the reports are out.
Meanwhile, sources informed that the woman’s body was transported in hearse van of Pernem Municipal Council. However, the concerned person failed to inform the driver. The driver moved around in Pernem on Monday and was informed about the same later after which he underwent home quarantine.
Dr Vidhya Parab, Health Officer of Tuem Community Health Centre said, “The deceased was bought to health centre in breathless condition and succumbed later. As per the protocol, we collected her swab for COVID testing. Late evening, the report came positive”.
