PANJIM: NGO Progressive Front of Goa (PFG) will stage a demonstration on the banks of River Mandovi in the State’s capital on December 6, with an aim to create awareness on saving Goa’s lifeline – Mhadei River.
“I appeal the people of Goa to join us in the demonstration on December 6, because the State government is not serious about protecting Mhadei River. The government has sold Mhadei River… Don’t lie to the Goans,” Hrudaynath Shirodkar of the PGF told a press conference on Tuesday, while lamenting Dr Pramod Sawant-led government’s lack of political will to protect Mhadei River.
The NGO also hinted foul play behind appointing Karnataka Minister C T Ravi as BJP Goa Observer at a time when the relations between the two neighbouring States are strained due to the Mhadei River water diversion.
“The State government isn’t openly speaking about Mhadei River. People of Goa will not accept massive destruction… In the midst of all this, Ravi is appointed as BJP Goa Observer. He is also the observer for the States of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu with which Karnataka is in dispute over water diversion,” he said demanding an answer from Ravi over his stand on the issue.
Shirodkar has also demanded that Karnataka should stop its ongoing work on the construction of canal in the Mhadei water basin until court delivers its verdict.
