PANJIM: Former Old Goa station-in-charge PI Devendra Gad, who was recently transferred to a non-executive posting, after an inquiry established his laxity in carrying out preliminary inquiry in the double murder case, is interestingly still handling the investigation.

A high-level inquiry was instituted after a journalist alleged that even after informing SDPO Panjim and Old Goa PI about the first murder of Shivaji Nayak mid-May, inaction on the police’s part led to the killing of his wife.

Gad was transferred to Goa Reserve Police on May 31 after the report submitted to higher officers disclosed lapses on part of PI Gad.

However, despite the transfer, the officer continues to investigate the case as a new investigating officer has not been appointed nor the case papers have been handed over to another police officer.

What’s even more bizarre is that even while the inquiry was on, the police department did not stop him from investigating the case, while he himself was embroiled in a case.

Two persons ~ contractor Osban Fernandes and labourer Ramesh Bhagwe ~ have been arrested for murdering the couple Shivaji Nayak and Sujata Nayak and for trying to kill their two children. The six-year-old girl and her four-year-old brother were strangled and dumped along the road at Anmod Ghat section on Goa-Karnataka border, but both survived and spilled the beans about the murder, resulting in the arrests and detection of the case.
