BELGAUM: With the two-day BJP national executive meet set to commence in Goa on Saturday, transporters from Karnataka, Maharashtra and other parts of India are eagerly anticipating the discussion on Goa’s controversial entry tax.
BJP MPs from Belgaum, Suresh Angadi and Dr Prabhakar Kore, who have strongly opposed the entry tax, told Herald that the matter will be taken up at the Goa meet.
While the BJP’s defeat in the recent Karnataka assembly elections will be discussed, the entry tax issue that was said to be one of the reasons for BJP’s defeat in areas bordering Goa is expected to be taken up at length during the two-day meet.
Dr Kore, who is also the member of the BJP national executive, said that he will raise the issue on priority.
“I have already briefed (BJP President) Rajnath Singh regarding the issue and its adverse impact on people outside Goa. I will be following it up once again during the Goa meeting,” Dr Kore said.
Angadi, who will be in Leh during the meeting, told Herald that he will brief former chief minister Jagdish Shettar and other leaders in Karnataka to take up the matter during the meeting.
It may be recalled that the blockade against Goa by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) declared on May 12 has been kept in abeyance, following an assurance by BJP national president Rajnath Singh and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley that the issue will be discussed and sorted out during BJP’s Goa meeting.
“During our visit to Delhi, both leaders assured us that the issue will be sorted out. We have also sent letters to all BJP executive members, reminding them of the issue. We have great hopes that the issue will be discussed and sorted out once for all,” AIMTC President Bal Malkit Singh told Herald.
