Navelim Residents Oppose AI Camera Near Church, Raise Traffic Congestion Concerns

Residents of Navelim, including George Barreto, Siddesh Bhagat and others, have opposed the installation of an AI-based traffic camera opposite Navelim Church, alleging that it is causing inconvenience to locals and adding to traffic-related concerns in the area.

George Barreto said the traffic signal installed opposite the church serves little purpose and often contributes to traffic congestion. He claimed that the situation becomes particularly challenging during peak school hours, when more than 2,000 students reportedly pass through the area.

Barreto also raised concerns over the location of the AI camera, saying it is creating inconvenience for residents and motorists using the busy stretch.

Questioning the need for multiple AI cameras in close proximity, he pointed out that one camera has been installed opposite Navelim Church, while another is located around 500 metres away at the Navelim junction near Furtado Petrol Pump.

Barreto questioned whether installing two AI cameras within such a short distance was an appropriate use of public funds and called for the authorities to review the need and positioning of the cameras.

The residents have urged the authorities to take into account local traffic conditions and the movement of schoolchildren before proceeding with traffic enforcement measures in the area.
