BELGAUM: A pilgrimage to Shirdi turned tragic for two youth from Mapusa when they were killed in a car accident near Nipani, about 80 kms from Belgaum, in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Sandesh Mulgaonkar (28) and Rohan Rhatwal (23) both from Mapusa died while three others were seriously injured when their car rammed into a truck from behind.
Cajipaul Fernandes, Gopal Bochadi and Ashok Bandekar, all from Mapusa, sustained serious injuries and are admitted at a private hospital in Kolhapur. While two are reported to be out of danger, the condition of one person, who sustained a head injury, is said to be serious.
According to Nipani PSI Dheeraj Shinde, the car (GA-03-P-9991) was proceeding from Goa to Shirdi when it rammed into the truck (AP-02-TA-6488), which was taking a turn.
The tiles-laden truck was proceeding from Andhra Pradesh to Radhanagari.
“The car was perhaps speeding when it rammed into the truck that was taking U turn near Ashray Circle near Nipani. It was truck driver’s fault in taking a turn without indicators and the vehicle could not be seen in night,” Shinde told Herald.
While two died on the spot, Nipani police immediately shifted three injured youth to CPR Hospital, Kolhapur, from where they were shifted by family members to private hospitals. A case is registered at the Nipani police station.
