Ponda: Ponda city locals will soon get piped gas in their residences. This service will be provided by a network that will be in place in a year’s time. The project was inagurated by South Goa MP Adv. Narendra Savoikar. The project is a joint venture between GAIL Gas Limited and BPCL  and will cost an estimated Rs 120 crores. The gas will be piped to all the five talukas in the first phase.
MP Adv. Narendra Savoikar today speaking on the occasion praised Prime Minister Narendar Modi and Petroleum  Minister Darmendra Pradhan for their initiative in creating a similar scheme  in Delhi. The project in Goa will mirror the scheme. He said it would not require booking for refill, chasing up for delivery or  storage space. This would end the hardships involved in trying to procure a LPG cyclinder. The bill will be charged just like the monthly electricty bill and metres will be installed for a gas connection.
According to KK Sachdev, piped natural gas is  procurred from oil and gas wells and transported through a continuous network of pipeline and it is user-friendly, economical, safer and non polluting and theoretically 10 percent cheaper than domestic LPG.In the event of leakage it dissipates immediately into the air.
Present on the occasion were PMC Deputy Chairman Shantaram Colvekar, K K Sachdev ,Chief Executive Officer of Goa Natural Gas Private Ltd Councillor Vishwanath Dalvi, Shivanand Sawanth and Sunil Desai.
