MARGAO: Thousands of litres of potable of water flowed into a storm water drain at Pajifond-Margao after a pipeline supplying water to the many parts of the city burst late Thursday, even as Salcete and surrounding talukas went without tap water on Friday due to the maintenance of the Selaulim water treatment plant.
The incident left a huge crater near the pipeline and caused damage to the road leading to Junta quarters.
The incident occurred at around 9.30 pm on Thursday when water started gushing out of the damaged pipeline. It took considerable time for the PWD to act and plug the valve to stop the water flow.
PWD Executive Engineer Vijai Kudchadkar said that work has commenced at the site on a war footing to repair the damaged line and restore water supply.
“The damaged pipeline is around 30 years old. It is one of the main line supplying water to many parts of the city. We have started the work on a war footing and the entire should end by Friday night,” Kudchadkar said.
Ward Councillor Raju Naik told the PWD to ensure early repair of the damaged pipeline, but also repair and restore the road leading to the Junta quarters.
Meanwhile, people of Salcete and neighbouring talukas had to go without water on Friday as the public taps ran dry since the Selaulim treatment plant was shut down for maintenance.
Senior PWD officials said that water from the Selaulim treatment plant will be released only at around 9 pm after completion of the work. Water is expected to reach Margao city on Saturday morning and the Port Town of Vasco only on Saturday evening.
