MAPUSA: People should plant trees for the benefit of our future generation, said Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira. Ferreira was speaking as the chief guest on the occasion of Vanamahotsav Day held at Primary Health Centre (PHC), Aldona on Wednesday.
Ferreira said that the tree plantation initiative was first undertaken in Delhi by the Commissioner of Delhi Kurshid Alam Khan in 1947 with an aim to take up afforestation, and subsequently it was formally observed by the Union government as Vanamahotsav since 1950.
“People should plant flowering and fruit bearing trees like drumsticks, incense, etc, and earn income as these have demand in the market. We need to have love for the environment. Trees can survive for years, and its fruits can be enjoyed by successive generations. Trees have life. Treat the tree well and the tree will treat you well, and you will have a healthy life,” Ferreira said.
Ferreira along with staff of the health centre planted saplings in the PHC complex.
