PM must revoke farm laws: Cong

PANJIM: The Opposition Congress on Saturday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should immediately revoke the three controversial farm laws and withdraw cases registered against protesting farmers.

Addressing a press conference at the Congress House, Panjim, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) working president and MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco refuted the allegations that the Congress had not raised its voice against coal transportation, railway double tracking and resumption of mining activity in the Parliament.

Lourenco pointed out that former Rajya Sabha MP late Shantaram Naik had on record all the issues concerning Goa in the Parliament.

“Anybody claiming that Congress has not raised all these issues in the Parliament is lying,” he said.

“Even Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had told the Prime Minister to keep aside the ego and prioritise farmers’ interest. Now we demand that the Prime Minister should revoke all the controversial agrarian laws and apologise to farmers for calling them terrorists,” he said.

The GPCC working president further pointed out that the Punjab was the first State to reject the three farm bills and unanimously passed a Bill to negate them.

“It was done in the interest of the farmers. Farmers’ interest is close to us. Chhattisgarh also passed a Bill to negate the Central laws, again this was done in the interest of the farmers. It was demand of the farmers and the Modi government was not looking at. Rajasthan Assembly also passed three Bills to negate the Central Bills,” Lourenco said.
