PONDA: The BJP-supported Ponda Municipal Council Chairperson Radhika Naik said though PMC won the award for best garbage management in Goa, too much politics by rival politicians had delayed most of the development projects in Ponda city for two years.
With barely weeks to go before PMC elections, scheduled on April 29, the chairperson said it was not an easy task completing the five years tenure.
Speaking about the council achievements, she said their achievement was providing a garbage-free Ponda, for PMC received the State government and Pollution Control Board awards as best municipality.
She added that while many other main cities were struggling to solve the garbage issue, PMC was successful in collecting garbage door-to-door and have sent a maximum amount of dry waste of plastic to the government for recycling.
PMC had planned various projects such as garden renovation, Shastri Mall building, Golden Jubilee project, which will be realized in near future, Radhika said.
When asked as to why the Council failed to complete the Golden Jubilee project and the Gymkhana project, which were assured by them after formation of the Council, she refused to accept it as PMC failure and said many development works in Ponda were halted due to vested politics by rival politicians.
She pointed out that the initial two years were wasted due to the politics played by politicians in Ponda and that the Golden Jubilee project could not be completed due to various reasons.
“The past Council did nothing for the project despite Rs 2 crore being sanctioned during their tenure. We took time to plan it afresh and approved additional funds from the government and the Golden Jubilee project is now progressing with an approved fund of Rs 5 crore,” she said.
On the Occasion GVM`s College of Economics and Mudra Prathishtan provided around 2000 cloth bags to the chairperson, which aims at keeping Ponda plastic free.
