MARGAO: Margao citizens on Wednesday made a forceful plea to the men-in-uniform to keep vigil on unscrupulous elements involved in supplying drugs or food laced with drugs around the city schools.
The citizens also called for random checking of antecedents of the migrant workers loitering behind the Margao Municipal building in search of jobs in a bid to keep a tab on criminal elements.
At an interactive session organised by the South Goa Journalists Association at the Margao Press room on Wednesday, citizens drew the attention of Margao Sub-Divisional Police Officer, DySP Mohan Naik to use of drugs by youngsters at road junctions and near some schools. Even as the DySP promised to act and crack a whip against the illegal activity, the citizens felt the police should not wait for specific complaints, but intensify patrolling around sensitive locales to instil fear into the miscreants. The issue was highlighted by MMC Councillor Avinash Shirodkar, Camilo Barretto and senior journalist Pramod Prabhugaonkar.
Answering a query that the police conduct only selective raids against matka bookies, DySP Naik denied the allegation, saying the police maintain impartiality in conducting the raids.
On the nuisance by beggars and minors consuming whitener in the market area, he said the police do round up the minors indulging in the practice and send them to Apna Ghar.
