Politicos war over claims of development in Margao

The political class can’t seem to agree if the former CM is doing anything constructive in his constituency

Even though there is a perception that not much work to develop Margao has been undertaken, the MLA Digambar Kamat has very silently got a lot of works not only sanctioned but even tendered. This is expected to give Margao a new look.
“I am in touch with my voters and I do what they require and I cannot be bothered about what others are saying,” he said dismissing the allegation that he has not done anything for Margao since he was elected last year.
In fact BJP South District Spokesperson Sharmad Raiturkar while accusing Digambar Kamat of neglecting Margao had appealed to Vijai Sardessai to pay some attention to Margao also. Incidentally Sharmad has lost the assembly elections twice to Digambar Kamat.
“I have no comments to make to what he said but you just wait for some time and you will see Margao changing,” said Digambar adding that he wields sufficient influence with the officers to get whatever is required to be done.
Former Vice Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council and known to be a staunch supporter of Digambar Kamat, Doris Teixeira took up for him and listed out some of the works that have already been tendered in Margao.
In the first place she said the traffic circle at power house that has been an eyesore for years will be done up properly as the work is already tendered for around Rs. 2 crore. Besides, a pavement will be constructed right from the power house circle to Railway station on the Aquem side.
“Right now people are using this stretch to dump their waste including construction debris which will be changed totally with the pavement that will act as a walking track for the people,” said Doris. The work order for this is likely to be issued shortly but due to the monsoons the work may start later.
All the illegal gaddas on Aquem side of the railway station will be removed and the legal gaddas will be shifted to the place near the public toilet where they will be provided gaddas with uniform design and shape, she revealed.
She pointed out that road works were done in different parts of the city resulting in an expenditure of over Rs. 4 crore  and the Colmorod area, she pointed out  had been cleared of all the potholes under this tender.
Besides she pointed out that manholes have been completed for the sewerage connection in Margao specially at Khareband and KRC station areas and all that remains now is the internal connection of the septic tanks to the sewerage line.
“The MLA has done a lot of work and Margao has not been neglected at all. The only problem is that he does not beat the drum to say what work he has done,” she said adding that in future it would be better to let the public know what works have been undertaken.
MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Prabbudessai said there was no neglect of Margao as works were taken up in all 25 wards of the council. “We do get a lot of push and encouragement from the Fatorda MLA which is lacking in the Margao MLA and probably we shall have to do something about it,” she said.
