Politics, sports and a sprinkling of governance

There were the highs and there were the lows, but the change in chief ministers was perhaps the highlight of the year 2014 for Goa. It was also the year when the government finally made a move to ensure that the people of Mayem got ownership of their land and the year when a step was taken to restart mining in the State. But it was also another year during which the Regional Plan was not finalized, and the Medium of Instruction Policy remained without being notified. Herald takes a look at 2014 and what made the headlines during the year

From Goa CM to India’s Defence

It was a red-letter day for Goa when Manohar Parrikar became the Defence minister of the country. Parrikar, who had been sworn-in as chief minister of Goa following the 2012 State Assembly elections, resigned as Chief Minister on November 8 and the following day was inducted into the Central Cabinet and entrusted with the Defence portfolio. Though there had been speculation through most of the year that Parrikar would make a move to the Centre, when it finally happened it took many by surprise.
A Mumbai IIT graduate, 59-year-old Parrikar, has been instrumental in taking the party to a simple majority in the State assembly. Under Parrikar’s leadership, BJP won 21 of the 40 Assembly seats in the 2012 Assembly elections.
